Kitchen Island Design Tips

Kitchen islands have become one of the most desirable amenities for homeowners looking to renovate -- but the actual process of designing and installing one can be complicated. If you want to add an island to your kitchen but aren't sure where to begin, here are a few quick kitchen island design tips to consider:

Enough Room To Move Around

Using space wisely is one of the primary concerns when it comes to kitchen island design. Islands can take up a lot of room, and the space around them can get tight when preparing food or entertaining. Being aware of who uses your kitchen for what tasks can help you make an informed decision about how to best use your kitchen space. If only one person cooks in your kitchen, 42 inches of space between your island and cabinets may be sufficient, but if two or more people cook together regularly, at least 48 inches are necessary.

Design Options

While kitchen island design typically defaults to square or rectangular shapes, your options are truly limitless. You can also select from a wide range of materials, finishes, and colors to customize the island you've always dreamed of. This island is the centerpoint of your kitchen, and it will be there for years to come -- so make sure you love it.

Extra Amenities

Adding extra features allows for further customization of your kitchen island design. Seating is one of the most popular additions, but make sure that you have correctly established the spacing between chairs -- typically, at least two feet -- and the knee clearance vs the island counter height. This will give your chairs adequate space, make your guests more comfortable, and allow for leg movement while seated.

Rolling doors are another popular addition that may be right for your kitchen island design. Rolling and sliding doors added to the side of an island make room for items like small appliances, kitchen towels, and cookbooks. Added shelves are another way to maximize storage space in your kitchen island design.

Kitchen Floorplan

When designing your island, be sure to visualize how it will function in the kitchen as a whole. For example, if you want a sink in your island, you'll also want to make sure to make space for a dishwasher and trash can nearby.
