Modern Kitchen Design Ideas For A Small Kitchen

September 12th, 2016 5:09pm

Not everyone has a large and spacious kitchen in their home. Sometimes you need to simply work with what you have, no matter how small the space is. Below are a few ideas for a small modern kitchen design.

Utilize An Appliance Garage and Roll-Out Drawers

Chances are if you have a smaller kitchen you will want to utilize as much of the space that you can. That means NOT leaving your appliances out on the counter - which can, in turn, make a space seem cluttered. But, if you do have appliances you like to use such as a blender, toaster, coffee maker, etc you can hide these products away when not in use.

- Appliance Garages: An appliance garage utilizes space underneath your counters or via pantries. They are simple boxed areas with a shelf that is spring-loaded. The outside looks like a regular cabinet, but inside is the place where you can store all the appliances.

- Roll-Out Drawers: These are installed below the counters - even closer toward the toe-kick of the cabinets. These drawers have a large and deep design, which gives you plenty of room to keep your appliances in.

If you have a lot of pots and pans you can also install a pot rack over the counters. This frees up a lot of valuable storage space, while also being a good conversational centerpiece for your kitchen.

Open and Airy

When you have a small kitchen, the last thing you want is to feel claustrophobic when using it. This is why a modern kitchen design may include completely doing away with any walls in the kitchen vicinity. The open and airy look is a allows you to take advantage of snug corners and make it look more spacious.

Add Glass Features

Adding glass to a modern kitchen design such as glass cabinet doors or a glass backsplash is another way to make a kitchen look bigger than it actually is. This is because the light refracts off of the surfaces and creates a mirror image.

Choosing The Right Colors

When it comes to your countertops, flooring, and cabinets its also important for you to choose the right colors for a small kitchen. Monochromatic colors such as light bright whites or grey hues can create the impression of spaciousness - even if the space is small.

Install A Fold Down

When you have a small kitchen you may feel like you won't have enough room to enjoy an eat-in kitchen. But, did you know that with a modern kitchen design you can actually create a fold down table? These tables aren't huge by any means, but they can easily fit from 1-4 people, depending on the space you have. When not in use, simply fold the table down - or create a pocket to push the table into so that it's flush with the wall.

Don't Forget The Ceiling!

Many people don't realize that when you have a small kitchen, painting the ceiling the same color as the rest of the kitchen can make it seem smaller than it really is. Instead, if you use a shade or two lighter, you will create the illusion of the ceilings being higher than they really are - which makes the kitchen look much larger than it really is.
