Turning an Outdated Kitchen into a Modern Family Space
This Scottsdale kitchen once had plenty of natural light, soaring ceilings, and a spacious footprint, but the layout simply wasn’t working for the family who lived there. Like many early-2000s kitchens, it was designed around a small island and a separate breakfast nook, which limited how the space could actually function day to day. With two active middle-school-aged boys in the house, the kitchen needed to function as much more than just a cooking space.
The family envisioned a space where meals, homework, and everyday life could happen together. They wanted a family-friendly kitchen remodel that offered more storage, better organization, and room for everyone to gather comfortably. At the same time, they hoped to modernize the kitchen’s style and materials to reflect a cleaner, more contemporary look.
The Scottsdale homeowners worked with Kitchens by Good Guys to design a thoughtful kitchen remodel that would completely reimagine the layout. Instead of simply updating finishes, the design team focused on how the kitchen functioned for the family. The transformation included a dramatically expanded island, improved flow to the dining room, new flooring throughout the main level, and a custom organization hub known as the Think Center.

The Before: What Problems Did the Old Kitchen Have?
Before the remodel, the kitchen had great natural light and a spacious footprint, but the layout didn’t support the family’s everyday needs.
The island was relatively small and offered almost no storage. Because the sink occupied much of the countertop, there was limited prep space and very little room for the homeowners’ two middle-school-aged boys to use the island for homework or projects. Minimal seating and a lack of drawers or cabinets also made it difficult to keep the kitchen organized.
The bay window area housed a small breakfast table that took up valuable floor space. While the windows brought in plenty of light, the dining nook prevented the island from expanding.
In addition, the original travertine flooring was beginning to deteriorate, and the raised-panel cabinetry and granite countertops gave the kitchen a dated look. While the room had great bones, it needed a thoughtful redesign to become the kind of modern kitchen remodel Scottsdale homeowners increasingly want: open, organized, and designed for everyday family life.
The Design Vision: A Modern Kitchen Remodel in Scottsdale
The Scottsdale homeowners wanted more than a cosmetic kitchen renovation. Their goal was to create a kitchen that supported their family’s daily routines while introducing a cleaner, more modern aesthetic.
To achieve this, the design team focused on three priorities: expanding the island, improving organization, and modernizing the kitchen's overall look.
A larger island became the centerpiece of the plan. The new layout would allow for a kitchen remodel with a large island that provides seating, prep space, and storage while serving as a central hub for meals, homework, and conversation.
Organization was another key goal. Everyday items like mail, school papers, and devices are often left on counters, so the design introduced a built-in Think Center to serve as a hidden organizational hub.
Finally, the homeowners wanted a more contemporary aesthetic. By simplifying architectural details and introducing two-tone cabinetry and modern materials, the kitchen would reflect many of today’s most popular modern kitchen remodel ideas.

The Layout Transformation: Reimagining the Bay Window
One of the most impactful changes in this luxury kitchen remodel in Scottsdale involved rethinking how the bay window area was used.
Originally, the space held a small breakfast table. While the windows brought in beautiful natural light and backyard views, the dining nook limited the kitchen’s functionality. Because the table occupied that corner of the room, the island couldn’t expand beyond its small footprint.
By incorporating the bay window area into the kitchen workspace, the designers were able to dramatically improve both function and flow. The new kitchen island with ample storage extends into the area where the dining table once sat, providing generous seating, expanded prep space, and additional cabinetry.
Instead of separating dining and cooking areas, the island now brings everything together. Family members can gather comfortably while meals are prepared, kids can spread out homework, and guests can socialize without getting in the cook’s way.
What Is the “Think Center” and Why Was It Added?
While the new island transformed the kitchen’s layout, another feature addressed one of the family’s biggest everyday challenges: staying organized.
The solution was a custom-built feature that the design team calls the Think Center.
Built into the back wall of the cabinetry, this hidden kitchen command center provides a dedicated space for everyday items that tend to collect in busy households. Behind cabinet doors, the area serves as a fully integrated kitchen homework station, keeping schoolwork and technology organized while maintaining a clean, organized design.
Inside, the Think Center includes space for:
- Mail and paperwork
- Calendars and school assignments
- Device charging stations
- A hidden printer
- Small office supplies and storage compartments
Because everything is tucked behind cabinet doors, the family can easily access what they need during the day and simply close the doors when guests arrive.

Improved Storage
Improving storage was one of the homeowners’ biggest priorities, and the redesign introduced several smart solutions that make the kitchen far more efficient.
The most noticeable upgrade is the new island. By expanding its footprint, the design team created a true kitchen island with storage, adding multiple drawers and cabinets that dramatically increase the kitchen’s capacity.
The island now includes features such as:
- Deep drawers for cookware and mixing bowls
- Dividers for cast-iron pans
- A double trash pull-out
- Additional storage for utensils and everyday tools
Beyond the island, the perimeter cabinetry also incorporates thoughtful organization features. Roll-out pantry shelves, tray dividers for baking sheets, spice pull-outs, and cutlery organizers help keep cabinets accessible and easy to maintain.
The design also includes an appliance garage, allowing small appliances like coffee makers and toasters to remain plugged in but hidden behind cabinet doors. This keeps countertops clear while maintaining convenience.

Modern Finishes That Transform the Space
While the layout changes dramatically improved how the kitchen functions, the updated finishes are what give this modern kitchen remodel its fresh, sophisticated look. The design blends warm and cool elements to create a balanced, contemporary aesthetic.
Two-Tone Cabinetry
One of the most striking features is the two-tone cabinetry, with a darker finish on the island and lighter cabinetry around the perimeter. This contrast highlights the island as the centerpiece of the kitchen while keeping the room bright and open.
Quartz Countertops and Marble Backsplash
Durable quartz countertops provide a surface that stands up to the demands of a busy kitchen. Behind the range and along the walls, a marble subway tile backsplash adds subtle texture and timeless elegance.
Matte Black Fixtures
Matte black hardware and plumbing fixtures introduce contrast and a modern edge, tying together the cabinetry, lighting, and overall design.
Large-Format Flooring
The original travertine was replaced with large-format 24-by-48-inch tile, which instantly modernizes the space. Larger tiles reduce grout lines and create a cleaner, more streamlined look.
Together, these finishes bring the kitchen into the present day while maintaining a timeless style.

Additional Custom Kitchen Features for Scottsdale
Beyond the major layout and storage improvements, this kitchen remodel also included a few thoughtful upgrades that make the space more convenient for everyday living and entertaining.
A Built-In Bar Fridge for Everyday Convenience
One feature the homeowners particularly appreciated was the addition of a bar refrigerator near the dining area. While small, it has a big impact on how the kitchen functions.
By separating beverages from the main refrigerator, family members and guests can easily grab drinks without interrupting the cooking workflow. Kids can access water or snacks, while adults can use the fridge when entertaining. This kitchen bar fridge idea may be a small addition, but it makes everyday life easier by reducing traffic around the main cooking area.
Solving the Backsplash Window Challenge
The original kitchen also had windows in the backsplash area behind the range, which limited cabinetry and backsplash design.
To achieve a cleaner look, the design team removed the windows in the kitchen interior, allowing for a continuous backsplash and a more cohesive range wall. However, the homeowners didn’t want to change the home's exterior appearance. The solution was to cover the windows from the inside while leaving them visible from the outside.
This creative approach preserved the home’s exterior while allowing the interior design to function properly. It’s a great example of how our thoughtful design-build process allows Scottsdale designers and builders to collaborate on creative solutions when unexpected challenges arise.

How the Kitchen Works for the Family Now
Today, the kitchen functions very differently for the family. The expanded island has become the natural gathering point for everything from quick breakfasts to homework sessions after school. With the Think Center keeping papers, devices, and school supplies organized, the countertops stay clear, and the space feels calm and uncluttered.
The redesigned layout also makes everyday routines easier. While meals are being prepared, the kids can spread out homework at the island or grab drinks from the bar fridge without interrupting the cooking process. Storage throughout the kitchen ensures that everything has a place, making it easier for the family to keep the space organized even during busy weeks.
What was once a dated layout with limited storage is now a modern, highly functional kitchen designed around how this family actually lives.
